It's a 3-inch, 1,240k-dot panel with touch support. Likewise, there's nothing bad to say about the vari-angle rear LCD. It's right up there with the best you'll find in this class of camera. There's plenty of detail thanks to a 2,359k-dot design, as well as plenty of eye relief, so you can see the entire view even if you wear eyeglasses. It's an OLED design, with optics that give it a large, 0.74x magnification rating-nearly as big as you'll find on many full-frame mirrorless cameras. The d-pad sets ISO, White Balance, Macro focus, and the active focus area. You also get dedicated Display and Play buttons, and a four-way directional pad with a center Menu/Set control. It's joined by Fn6/Q.Menu, which opens up the on-screen settings menu by default, and Fn7/Delete. There's a three-way switch to change the focus mode (AFS/AFF, AFC, and MF are available), with an AF/AE Lock button at its center. The buttons you'll use while making images are on the right side. There's also an Eye Sensor function for automatic switching. Fn8 is all the way by its lonesome at the top left corner-by default it switches between the EVF and LCD. There are more programmable function buttons on the rear. The zoom control lever surrounds the shutter release, and the On/Off switch is nested at the side of the Mode dial. There are also two programmable buttons (Fn4/EV, Fn5), Record to start and stop videos, and the shutter release. On the right side there's the standard Mode dial, along with front and rear dials to adjust exposure settings. The one at the left side switches between single, continuous drive, 4K Photo, and self-timer capture. There are multiple control dials on the top plate. Releasing the button zooms back in, so it's very natural to use. The lens itself sports a control ring, which can be used to adjust zoom or manual focus, along with programmable Fn1, Fn2, and Fn3 buttons on its side.īy default, Fn3 serves as a framing assist button-it zooms out for a wider view, but shows an outline of the zoomed-in view, which is very helpful when trying to find a bird in a tree branch or a similarly tough-to-find subject. The FZ1000 II can easily be used in fully automatic mode, but it also offers extensive manual controls for shutterbugs who want it. You can step up to the RX10 III and enjoy a longer zoom range, or, if you don't want to spend too much more, you can look at the RX10 II, which has a shorter 24-200mm f/2.8 zoom lens. The lens optics are housed in a metal barrel, which gives the camera a slightly more premium feel, but it's not on the same level as Sony's RX10 series, all of which feature magnesium bodies and weather protection. The FZ1000 II feels quite solid in the hand, but does utilize a lot of plastic in its construction. The aforementioned Sony models zoom in a little farther with the same sensor size, but for significantly more reach, you'll need to step down to a camera with a smartphone-sized sensor, like the Canon PowerShot SX70 HS and its 65x (21-1,365mm) zoom lens. You can net shots with a slightly wider view than the main camera on most smartphones, and can zoom in with enough power for capturing images of wildlife, sports action, and other subjects where you can't get in close. The 25-400mm zoom covers a wide variety of situations. It's similar to what Sony does with its RX10 III and RX10 IV models, both of which use a longer 24-600mm f/2.4-4 zoom, but also cost more than the FZ1000 II. It opens up to f/2.8 at the wide end, with the aperture narrowing to f/4 when zoomed all the way in. The fixed lens covers the same angle of view as a 25-400mm zoom for a full-frame camera. We tested both versions and they perform identically. The same camera is also sold by Leica, as the V-Lux 5, but you'll pay a premium-Leica's version costs $1,250. It's finished in black, with the Lumix logo much more prominently displayed than the Panasonic name. The camera measures 3.8 by 5.4 by 5.2 inches (HWD) and weighs about 1.8 pounds.
